Net WPM = (correct chars ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Every 5 characters = 1 "word" — including spaces and punctuation
NET WPM
Correct characters only. Errors subtract from your score. This is your real skill indicator.
RAW WPM
All keystrokes including errors. Shows your burst speed regardless of accuracy.
Accuracy = correct chars ÷ total chars × 100
Measured per character typed, not per word
Below 90% — Slow down and focus on accuracy first.
90–95% — Acceptable. Push for precision at this speed.
95–98% — Good. Speed gains will come naturally.
98%+ — Excellent. You can safely push speed now.

Keep F and J as anchor keys — they have tactile bumps. Always return fingers here after every keystroke.
CORE RULES
👀
LOOK AT THE SCREEN, NOT YOUR HANDS
The #1 habit to build. Looking down breaks your flow and prevents muscle memory from forming.
🧘
RELAX YOUR HANDS AND WRISTS
Tension slows you down and causes strain. Hover fingers lightly above keys; never press with effort.
🐢
ACCURACY BEFORE SPEED
Slow down until you can type with 98%+ accuracy. Speed is a byproduct of accurate, repeated movement.
🔄
RETURN TO HOME ROW
After every keystroke, your fingers should spring back to F and J. This is the core of touch typing efficiency.
🎵
DEVELOP A RHYTHM
Consistent, even keystrokes beat erratic bursts. Think of typing like playing a musical instrument — flow matters.
▸ Chair height: Elbows at 90°, forearms parallel to floor
▸ Wrists: Float above keyboard — never rest on desk while typing
▸ Monitor: Eye level, arm's length away, slight downward tilt
▸ Keyboard angle: Flat or slight negative tilt (tented away) for wrist comfort
▸ Breaks: 5–10 min break every 45 min to prevent RSI
▸ Lighting: Avoid screen glare — reduces eye fatigue that impacts focus
AVOID THESE
✗
Hunt and peck typing — Using only 2 fingers forces you to look down constantly
✗
Wrong finger assignments — Using the wrong finger for a key creates bad muscle memory
✗
Rushing before you're ready — Typing fast with low accuracy trains you to make errors
✗
No daily practice — Irregular sessions prevent muscle memory from consolidating
✗
Skipping hard keys — Avoiding punctuation and numbers creates permanent weak spots
STEP BY STEP
1
STAGE 1 — HOME ROW MASTERY (1–2 weeks)
Use Practice Mode → Home Row lesson exclusively. Type ASDF JKL; until you can do it without looking. Target: 30 WPM on home row with 95%+ accuracy.
📖 Practice Mode
Lesson 1: Home Row
Goal: 30 WPM
2
STAGE 2 — FULL ALPHABET (2–4 weeks)
Add top row (QWERTY) and bottom row (ZXCV) one at a time. Use Practice Mode lessons 2–5. Run 30-second tests in Single Task mode using Common Words. Target: 40 WPM on full alphabet.

STAGE 5 — ELITE TERRITORY (6+ months)
At this level, gains come from consistency and eliminating micro-hesitations on specific word combinations. Run the Speed Gauntlet in Multi Task mode daily. Monitor your Consistency score — it should be above 90%. Consider switching to an ergonomic or split keyboard layout.

WARM-UP (5 min)
3× 15s sprints. Don't worry about score — just wake up your fingers.
🎯
DRILL (10 min)
Practice Mode on your 2 weakest lessons from the error heatmap.
⏱
BENCHMARK (5 min)
One full 60s test at your best effort. Save the record.
🌊
FLOW (10 min)
Page Tests or Quote mode — sustained typing without pressure.
🎯 SINGLE TASK
15s Sprint — Pure burst speed. Best for daily benchmarking.
60s Standard — Industry-standard WPM test. Most comparable.
100 Words — Tests accuracy over a fixed target. No time pressure.
Quote Mode — Real sentences; tests natural language rhythm.
Code Mode — Symbols and brackets. Hard mode for devs.
🔀 MULTI TASK
Chains multiple modes together. Tests your ability to maintain speed across different content types without a break.
Speed Gauntlet — Best for advanced users
Accuracy Drill — Trains precision over speed
Mixed Marathon — Broadest challenge
📖 PRACTICE
Structured drill lessons for building muscle memory. Use when you want to fix a specific weakness (e.g. you keep mistyping 'p' or ';').
Start from Lesson 1 and complete in order. Check lessons off with the ✓ badge system.
⏱ TIMED TESTS
Set a WPM and accuracy goal and see if you pass or fail. Great for accountability — forces you to perform under defined standards rather than just noting your score.
Recommended: set goal 5–10 WPM above your average to push yourself.
📄 PAGE TESTS
Type full paragraphs and passages across multiple pages. Tests stamina and ability to maintain speed over long durations — more realistic than a 15s sprint.
Use Literature or Prose sets for natural language flow. Tech Docs for programmer scenarios.

Why is my WPM lower here than on other sites?
Different sites measure differently. This tool uses net WPM (errors count against you) and generates varied words that include less common ones, making it harder than tests that repeat the top 10 words. Raw WPM here matches most sites' "WPM" figure.
How long does it take to reach 100 WPM?
With 20–30 minutes of daily deliberate practice: roughly 3–6 months from zero to 60 WPM, and another 6–18 months to reach 100 WPM. Genetics and prior musical training (finger independence) can accelerate this. The ceiling for most people without special effort is around 70–80 WPM.
Should I switch keyboard layouts (e.g., Dvorak or Colemak)?
Only if you're starting from scratch and committed long-term. Switching layouts at 60+ WPM QWERTY will cause a temporary regression to ~20 WPM for weeks. The long-term gain for most people is modest (5–15 WPM) and not worth the disruption unless you have RSI concerns, where Colemak's reduced finger travel can genuinely help.
Why does my accuracy drop when I try to type faster?
This is normal — your current speed limit is the boundary between controlled motor memory and chaos. To push through it: hold 10 WPM slower than your comfortable max for 10 minutes daily. Accuracy trains the neural pathways that then allow speed to increase cleanly.
Does keyboard hardware matter?
For most people under 100 WPM, very little. Above 100 WPM, a mechanical keyboard with consistent linear switches (e.g., Cherry MX Red or Speed Silver) can reduce typos caused by inconsistent actuation. Membrane keyboards are slightly slower due to key travel. More importantly: wrist position and technique matter far more than hardware.
How do I fix my weak keys shown in the error heatmap?
Open the Virtual Keyboard (⌨️ KEYBOARD button), enable Error Heat and Error Counts. Your most-missed keys glow red. Then go to Practice Mode and find the lesson that covers those keys. Repeat that lesson until the heat disappears. Alternatively, create a custom word list in Settings containing only words with your weak keys.
Is my data saved anywhere?
Records and settings are saved to your browser's localStorage only — no server, no account, no upload. Your data never leaves your device. If you clear browser data or use a different browser/device, records will not carry over. Use the Export JSON button in Records to back up your data.
Why should I practice with Code Mode if I'm not a programmer?
Code snippets force you to type characters you rarely use in normal text: parentheses, brackets, semicolons, underscores, equals signs. Practicing these develops full keyboard confidence — you'll stop hesitating when these characters appear in emails, passwords, URLs, and filenames.
